Entering the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary, an unspoiled view of the peaceful environment spreads out before you. The swamp’s red and white mangrove trees provide a natural habitat for more than 40 species of birds, and are a temporary home for a large number of migrant and wintering water and shore birds. As you follow the winding path of the boardwalk, you get a close-up view of the mangroves and marine life. Placed on trees throughout the sanctuary, are information boards describing the flora and fauna. Green monkeys and mongooses can often be seen flitting along the path and through the trees, while several species of rare plants can be found in the swamp, including the button creeper (with pink stems and white flowers) and sedges (tall plants that grow over three feet (one meter) high. There is also an enclosed area, which is home to parrots, the scarlet ibis, and a large collection of flamingos. The sanctuary is the perfect way to experience the unique beauty of a mangrove swamp. Located in the parish of Christ Church, it has the largest expanse of inland water in Barbados.
